At some point in the first year or two of practice, every PMHNP has the same thought: “Wait — what exactly do I need to do to keep my certification?” If you’re asking that question, you’re in the right place. PMHNP-BC certification renewal is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — requirements in psychiatric nursing.
It’s a reasonable question with a surprisingly complicated answer. The ANCC renewal process involves specific hour requirements, accreditation rules, pharmacotherapy minimums, and documentation standards that trip up even experienced providers. And the consequences of getting it wrong are real — certification lapse can mean losing your ability to practice, your prescriptive authority, and your livelihood.
This guide walks through every aspect of the PMHNP-BC certification renewal process, based on the current ANCC Certification Renewal Handbook (effective September 2025, Version 2: February 2026). We’ve also built a Certification Renewal Toolkit at the bottom of this post with downloadable-ready checklists, tracker templates, and key links. Bookmark this page. You’ll come back to it.
ANCC certification renewal happens on a 5-year cycle. There are no annual CE reporting requirements — everything is accumulated over the full 5-year period and submitted at renewal time. Here’s what’s required:
All 75 hours must be related to your certification role and specialty (psychiatric-mental health). This is the foundation of every renewal. Hours in unrelated specialties — wound care, pediatric primary care, obstetrics — won’t count, no matter how many you accumulate.
Of those 75 total hours, at least 25 must be specifically in pharmacotherapeutics. For PMHNPs, this typically means psychopharmacology content — medication management, prescribing updates, drug interactions, dosing strategies, pharmacokinetics, and related clinical pharmacology. This is the requirement that catches the most people off guard, because generic CE courses on topics like therapy techniques, documentation, or cultural competency don’t qualify toward this bucket.
If you’re not intentionally seeking pharmacotherapy-specific CE from the start of your cycle, you’ll find yourself scrambling at the end. Build these hours first.
At least 60 of the 75 hours must come from formally accredited sources. Acceptable accreditation includes:
Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) approved by an ANCC-accredited provider or approver; Continuing Medical Education (CME) approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits; and continuing education approved through the Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education.
The remaining 15 hours can be non-formally approved — but they still must be relevant to your psychiatric-mental health specialty. Examples include attending grand rounds, participating in journal clubs, or self-directed learning activities.
In addition to the 75 CE hours, ANCC requires you to complete at least one of eight Professional Development categories in its entirety. The good news: if you complete all your CE hour requirements (Category 1: Continuing Education), this box is already checked. The other seven categories include academic credits, presentations and lectures, publications and research, precepting students, professional service, practice hours (1,000+ in your specialty), and re-examination.

This is where most PMHNPs make their biggest mistake: waiting until renewal time to log their CE hours. ANCC has an online Professional Development Record built into your account at nursingworld.org, and they strongly recommend using it from day one of your certification cycle.
Step 1: Set up your ANCC account immediately after certification. Go to nursingworld.org and create your account if you haven’t already. This is where all your renewal activity will be managed.
Step 2: Log CE hours after every activity. Don’t wait. After every conference, webinar, course, or CE activity, log it in your Professional Development Record immediately. Enter the course title, date, hours, sponsoring organization, and a content description if the title doesn’t clearly reflect the subject matter.
Step 3: Enter pharmacotherapy hours as a separate line item. This is critical and ANCC is explicit about it: if a CE activity awards 10 total hours with 5 in pharmacotherapy, you enter 5 general CE hours and 5 pharmacotherapeutic hours as two separate entries. Do not combine them into a single 10-hour entry.
Step 4: Keep all completion certificates. ANCC does not require you to upload certificates when you log activities, but you must be able to produce them immediately if audited. Keep a digital folder organized by year. ANCC conducts random audits, and failure to provide documentation can result in suspension or revocation of certification.
Step 5: Retain documentation through your next renewal cycle. Don’t delete anything after you renew. ANCC requires you to maintain supporting documents through the following renewal period — that’s up to 10 years of documentation.
A common source of anxiety is not knowing when to start the renewal process. Here’s a practical timeline that keeps you ahead of the curve:
Years 1–2: Aim for approximately 15 CE hours per year. Start building your pharmacotherapy hours early — they’re the hardest to accumulate if you leave them until the end. Set up your ANCC online account and begin logging activities immediately. Create your digital certificate folder system now.
Year 3 (mid-cycle check): Do a self-audit. How many total hours are logged? How many are pharmacotherapy? How many are formally approved? Have you completed your Professional Development category? If you’re behind, you have two full years to catch up — but the window narrows quickly.
Year 4 (12 months before expiration): You are now eligible to submit your renewal application. Review every entry in your ANCC Professional Development Record. Make sure pharmacotherapy hours are entered separately. Verify that your documentation folder has a matching certificate for every logged activity. Begin verifying fee amounts and membership discounts.
Year 5 (expiration year): Submit your renewal. All Professional Development activities must be entered in your ANCC account before you start the renewal application — this is required, not optional. You cannot go back and add activities after initiating the application. Submit early to allow time for any corrections.

This is the section about PMHNP-BC certification renewal consequences that no one wants to read, but every PMHNP should understand before it becomes relevant.
ANCC does not offer a grace period. There is no backdating. If your certification expires, there is a gap in your certification history, and ANCC cannot retroactively fill it — even if you were actively practicing and maintaining CE hours during that time. That gap may need to be reported to employers, credentialing committees, and state boards.
Lapsed 0–2 years: You can reactivate by meeting all current renewal requirements and paying an additional reactivation fee (approximately $125 on top of the standard renewal fee).
Lapsed more than 2 years (PMHNP-BC Across the Lifespan): You must meet renewal requirements and retake and pass the certification exam. This means re-studying for and sitting for the full PMHNP board exam — a significant investment of time, money, and stress.
Lapsed more than 2 years (Adult PMHNP-BC — Renewal Only): The credential is permanently lost. There is no pathway to reinstatement. The exam for this certification is retired, so there is no option to re-certify. This is irreversible.
Lindsay Hill, DNP, PMHNP-BC, founder of the Psych NP Fellowship, emphasizes this point to every new PMHNP: “Set your calendar reminders now — 2 years out, 1 year out, and 6 months out from your expiration date. The consequences of lapsing are too severe to leave to memory.”
PMHNP-BC certification renewal fees vary based on professional membership status. As of the 2025–2026 handbook:
ANA Member: approximately $275. AANP Member: approximately $295. APNA Member: approximately $250. Non-Member: approximately $375.
All fees include a non-refundable $140 administrative fee. Expedited review is available for an additional fee. Always verify current pricing directly at nursingworld.org. If you’re not currently a member of any qualifying organization, the cost difference between membership + renewal fee and non-member renewal fee is worth calculating — membership often pays for itself at renewal time.
A few common mistakes that waste time and money — and leave PMHNPs short on hours when they thought they were covered:
Repeat courses — the same course only counts once per renewal cycle, even if you retake it. Presentations required by your job — must be voluntary and above your employment responsibilities. Panel moderating — only primary presenters qualify for CE credit. Orientation preceptor hours — not accepted under the preceptorship category; only precepting students in a formal academic program counts. Publications “in press” — must be fully published, not pending or accepted. Submitting certificates instead of PD Record entries — ANCC will not accept completion certificates in place of completing the online Professional Development form. Every activity must be individually logged.

We built this toolkit so you can stop Googling and start tracking. Everything below is designed to keep your renewal on autopilot from the day you certify to the day you submit.

Most PMHNPs accumulate their CE hours piecemeal — a webinar here, a conference there, an online course somewhere else. It works, but it creates a tracking burden across multiple platforms and providers, and it’s easy to end up short on pharmacotherapy hours or formally approved credits without realizing it until renewal time.
The alternative is completing all 75 hours through a single ANCC-accredited program that includes the required pharmacotherapy content.
The Psych NP Fellowship was designed with this exact problem in mind. The program provides all 75 ANCC-approved contact hours, including 25 pharmacotherapeutic hours, through an ANCC-accredited provider. All 75 hours are formally approved, which exceeds the 60-hour minimum. One enrollment, one certificate, one line in your Professional Development Record — and your entire 5-year renewal CE requirement is satisfied.
But the Fellowship isn’t just a CE factory. Those 75 hours include live coaching sessions, clinical case consultations, psychopharmacology training, diagnostic lectures, and psychotherapy integration — the kind of mentorship that actually builds clinical confidence, not just checks a recertification box.
Lindsay Hill, DNP, PMHNP-BC puts it simply: “Your CE hours should make you a better clinician, not just a re-certified one. If you’re going to invest the time, make sure those hours count for something beyond a number on a form.”
75 total contact hours per 5-year cycle, with at least 25 in pharmacotherapeutics and at least 60 from formally approved (ANCC-accredited, AMA PRA Category 1, or Joint Accreditation) sources.
Yes. ANCC accepts AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits as formally approved continuing education, as well as CE from other healthcare disciplines (pharmacy, social work, PA) as long as the content is applicable to your psychiatric-mental health specialty.
You can submit up to 12 months before your expiration date. ANCC recommends starting early to avoid last-minute complications. All Professional Development activities must be logged in your ANCC account before you initiate the application.
If lapsed under 2 years, you can reactivate by meeting current requirements plus a reactivation fee (~$125). If lapsed over 2 years with the PMHNP-BC Across the Lifespan credential, you must retake the certification exam. For holders of the retired Adult PMHNP-BC credential, lapsing more than 2 years means permanent loss of the credential with no reinstatement option.
Yes. ANCC explicitly requires pharmacotherapy hours to be entered as separate line items in your Professional Development Record. If a single CE activity includes both general and pharmacotherapy content, split it into two entries.
The Psych NP Fellowship provides all 75 ANCC-approved contact hours (including 25 pharmacotherapeutic hours) through a single ANCC-accredited program, fully satisfying the CE requirements for PMHNP-BC 5-year renewal.
